A Message from the President

Friends,

2014 has been a busy one so far for the Q. Walter Peabody Foundation. First, I would like to congratulate Amy Cerbie, the second winner of the Q. Walter Peabody Fine Arts Grant. She is a promising young artist, and you can read more about her in the newsletter. I would also like to congratulate Michaela Phonkhoumphon, the 2014 Zachary Weston Memorial Scholarship winner. Michaela made a strong impression on the scholarship committee, and we look forward to following what will doubtless be a great future for her. While I am name-dropping, I want to extend a warm welcome to our newest board member, Ryan Dolan. Ryan and his family have been strong supporters of the Peabody Foundation and have attended the vast majority of our events. We look forward to working with Ryan even more closely.

I also want to take a moment to extend the Foundationís sincere thanks to the Hewitt Foundation, which sponsors a 5K (read more about it below) in Hubbard Park in Meriden and donates all proceeds to other charities. For the first time, the Q. Walter Peabody Foundation was selected to participate in the 5K, and we were thoroughly impressed both with the event itself (thanks to everyone who joined!) and the tremendous generosity of the Hewitt Foundation and Hewitt family. We hope to continue to partner with them in the future.

Attached to this newsletter is a coupon for our annual Westbrook Lobster fundraising dinner. I would just like to remind everyone who plans to attend to make a reservation in advance (before the day of the event- October 13th), so that the restaurant can be sure to have enough staff on hand. This will help reduce wait times and improve everyoneís experience. Hope to see everyone there!

Thank you for your continued support,
Luciano Racco

The Q. Walter Peabody Foundation's newest director joined us in April of 2014. Ryan Dolan is a ceramic artist and educator from Meriden, CT. Upon graduating from Orville H. Platt High School, Mr. Dolan attended Central Connecticut State University, earning a Bachelor of Art degree in ceramics and sculpture, and later returning to complete his teacher certification in art.

As a practicing artist, Mr. Dolan has held exhibitions throughout Connecticut and is represented in collections across the United States and Europe. He is a former ceramics instructor at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, CT as well as Simsbury Arts Academy in Simsbury, CT.

In May of 2013, Mr. Dolan earned his K-12 teacher certification, and in August of that year began his professional teaching career at Hamden High School, where he teaches photography.

Restaurant benefits like this are our biggest fundraisers.†In the past five years, benefits like those at Westbrook Lobster House and Avanti Restaurant have helped us raise over $6,000 to give back to students in Meriden. We are privileged to be able to work with such great community members. And, as always, thank you, for continuing to support these fabulous local restaurants.

Go Peabody!

The Q. Walter Peabody Foundation participated in our first annual Hewitt Run for a Cause on Sunday, June 15th. It was a lovely day: beautiful weather, a rambunctious crowd, and a sprightly air of athletic jubilation. We are so grateful to the Hewitt family for including us as one of their charities. We received over $3,000 from the race and individual donations combined! In addition to being a much-appreciated source of funds for the Zachary Weston Memorial Scholarship, the Hewitt Run was an excellent opportunity for directors and supporters to spend some quality time together. It was also a great opportunity to unveil the new Q. Walter Peabody Foundation t-shirt (see left). Thanks again to the Hewitt Foundation for including us, and to everybody who came out to support the Peabody Foundation!

Additional photos and race results are available on our website and Facebook page.

The Peabody Foundation is pleased to announce Michaela Phonkhoumphon as the winner of the 2014 Zachary Weston Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded each year to a Platt High School senior who has a passion for learning and demonstrates a genuine quality of kindness. Michaela impressed us with her incredible friendship to both students and teachers, and answered our questions with a grace and poise far beyond her years.

Each year, we ask each candidate to describe a moment in his/her life which made him/her most proud. Michaela answered that she was most proud of creating a farewell video for a faculty member who was leaving Platt. This act in itself -- taking on this elaborate and heartfelt project to do something nice without any recognition or reward in return -- shows Michaela's intrinsic kindness.

Congratulations, Michaela! We wish you all the best!

In July, we announced the second winner of the Q. Walter Peabody Fine Arts Grant - Amy Cerbie! This award is designed to give Meriden high school students funding for a specific artistic venture. Amy will use her $500 award to take vocal lessons over the summer to prepare for her senior year at both Platt High School and the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. In 2013, we awarded our first Fine Arts grant to Allison Pomeroy. Allison used her funding for supplies to create oil paintings. She has been sharing updates with us throughout the year, and we are pleased to reveal the final result (see right)!

Funding for the Fine Arts awards comes from donations from donors like you. Thank you for helping to make this award possible! Stay tuned for more information about the next round of awards.
